Lagging indicator

An indicator whose value depends on data that has already occurred.

In plain English

All indicators lag to some degree, because all of them are computed from past prices. The lag is the cost of not needing to predict.

Example

A moving average cannot signal a trend change until enough new closes have entered its window.
